OUR Story
(SO FAR!)

By Nathan Westgate
Founder & Chief Engagement Officer

I am a graphic designer with a deep love of language. I fell for the idea of ideas at Blackpool & The Fylde College in 1995 and haven’t looked back… until now!

Specialising in brand consultancy most of my career, I am at my best developing meaningful language and memorable visual identities to engage and inspire. I have always held a strong belief in the power of ideas to create change.

Nearly 20 years ago I conjured up the two words, ‘Secretly Famous’ – with a hunch that there was something special about this unique paradox… and perhaps I could put it to good use in the future.

Over the course of the years in between, there have been many twists and turns, not least bringing up 3 children – which as many of you will know, can be testing! Being a dad is, without a doubt, the most rewarding part of my life. Myself and my partner, Rose, frequently talk about writing a booked titled, ‘Finding the Angle’ – maybe that’s one for the future too!

At the end of 2023, I was asked by Newton Bluecoat Primary School (near Preston where we live) to help design a logo to represent their school ethos, ‘Shine From The Inside Out’. I did this as a gesture of goodwill for the great experience the school had given my children - and me many years ago!

The logo was applied in etched vinyl to over 40 windows around the school. It was at this moment (I call it the ‘Wrecking Bulb’ moment!), pulling away the backing paper to reveal the text, that I had a breakthrough idea – or what I thought could be one, with some nurturing and the right support.

Once I’d completed the installation of the window vinyls, I wandered through to see Liz, the headteacher, to let her know the job was complete and to see if she’d be open to a discussion in the new year about my bubbling thoughts.

With a small (but powerful!) presentation under my arm, focussed on the value of the narrative in a school environment, we discussed the merits of adopting a peer-to-peer recognition process – based on my experience in grassroots football of ‘The Players’ Player of the Year’ award. It’s the one that means the most.

What if we cultivated this process in school, aligned with the engaging language of Secretly Famous? A way to harness kindness and reveal potential.

In a world absorbed in celebrity status, addicted to social media and growing accustomed to instant gratification (and the negative energy it breeds), we believed Secretly Famous was something worth aspiring to.

We did not anticipate the incredible outpouring of kindness, compassion and gratitude that followed. Heartfelt nominations came flooding in, and to our surprise, children felt compelled to recognise teaching and support staff too – which has brought the whole school community together, with frequent reports of an enhanced sense of belonging.

After Liz gave me her support to get things off the ground, more inspirational leaders joined throughout 2024 - who were brave enough to embrace something new, because they believe what we believe; the role of a leader is to create more leaders.

Inspiring the leaders of tomorrow is a great place to start!

2025 has seen us partner with Fleetwood Town Community Trust – the charity arm to the football club; taking Secretly Famous™ into the heart of their activities in schools and the wider community. A process we hope to replicate throughout the UK - and beyond!

Steve Jobs (Apple’s late founder) had a dream to make a massive dent in the universe. Our dream is to restore it by turning the world inside out; to live in a world where people are judged by the colour of their character, not the latest filter!

We hope you will join us.
